President James Garfield Memorial Pottery Plate, America, 1881-85, circular plate with a bust of President James A. Garfield in relief encircled by the inscription "WE MOURN OUR NATION'S LOSS," and faint impressed inscriptions of his birth, death, and day he was shot, the rim border with stippled drapery, floral, and vine designs, mottled blue, yellow, and brown glaze, dia. 10 3/4 in.

Note: President Garfield was born November 19, 1831. After being in office only six months, he was shot by Charles J. Guiteau, July 2, 1881, in a Washington, D.C., railroad station. Guiteau was an embittered attorney who had unsuccessfully sought a consular post. Garfield died eighty days later of complications from the wound.
