N.B. Aldro Thompson Hibbard was intimately familiar with the shores and dunes of Cape Cod, having spent parts of his childhood and adolescence in Falmouth and Pocasset. In the early 1910s, as a student at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Hibbard studied examples of French Impressionism in the collection, particularly works by Claude Monet. Of Monet, Hibbard has said, 'I liked his color separation…especially in handling light, and decided that broken color was for me. Also at that time, the Impressionists painted outdoors. Their paintings were luminous, like Nature, and that appealed to me.' (1) The present work which depicts Gay Head on Martha's Vineyard, shows an affinity with Monet's technique in its diffusion of light, delicate hues, and varied brushstrokes. (1) Cooley, John L. A.T.
