Description:

Two Framed English Wax Portraits, late 18th/early 19th century, one depicting an 18th century military gentleman, identified in pen to back of frame as being Colonel Oglethorpe, with lightly inscribed maker's mark Petit, the other a lady, identified as Mrs. Fitzherbert, both on reverse black painted glass mounts, set into bird's-eye maple frames, frames 6 3/4 x 5 3/4 in.

Note: Colonel James Oglethorpe was one of the founders of the State of Georgia, having founded its first settlement, called Savannah, in 1733. Maria Fitzherbert was the infamous mistress of Britain's King George IV.
Estimate $800-1,200

Wax portraits in very good condition; flaking to the black reverse painted glass mount, fairly heavy in spots.
