Condition: Mounted, nail holes to edges, board slightly warped, toning, foxing and/or staining.
N.B. Elizabeth Verner lived and worked in Charlestown, South Carolina, and devoted her career to the depiction and preservation of the people and buildings of her native city. She was born in Charlestown in 1883, and was encouraged to pursue art as a child by her maternal grandfather, Henry Franklin Baker, and fellow Charlestown artist, Alice Ravenel Huger Smith. After attending the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Verner returned to Charlestown, where she worked primarily in pastel and etching. She was influenced by the work of Boston-based artist Laura Coombs Hills, also noted for her work with pastels. Verner frequently depicted the female vendors at the flower market, whom she felt were an integral part of the Charlestown culture. She also is noted for drawing with pastel onto silk mounted on panel, a technique which she purportedly deemed 'vernercolor.'
