N.B. Edith Hamlin's landscapes evoke the mood of the Southwest, reflecting her time spent in California, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Nevada, and Mexico. She was born in Oakland, California, and as a child lived in both Oakland and Santa Cruz. Her interest in art began while she was living in Santa Cruz and accompanied her father, Charles Hamlin, on sketching trips. Hamlin studied at the California School of Fine Arts, then at Columbia University. She worked as a muralist, on projects for the WPA's federal art program including the Coit Tower in San Francisco and for the Mission High School. This style is carried into her oil paintings. In 1937, she married prominent Western landscape artist Maynard Dixon. The two traveled to Tucson and painted scenes of the Southwest until Dixon's death in 1946. Hamlin ultimately moved to San Francisco, where she continued to work from her hilltop home studio.
