N.B. Philadelphia-born artist Thomas Doughty is best known for his views of Pennsylvania, New York, and New England. His landscapes depicted specific locations but often integrated a somewhat idealized vision of the world. The poetic scenes presented a sense of space that was, at once, both intimate and limitless. Doughty's work was perhaps a reflection of America's mindset; he was painting at a time when America was rapidly expanding westward and Americans were intrigued and amazed by their surroundings. Doughty, along with Thomas Cole, pioneered the movement of landscape painting which would evolve into the Hudson River School.
Estimate $12,000-18,000

The lining is adhered with wax . The retouch is to a repaired tear to the foreground trees, just left of center. The repaired area is cross-shaped, approximately 2 inches long and 1 inch tall. There is much additional retouch, nearly all of it very fine lines to the craquelure. The craquelure is stable. The work might possibly benefit from a gentle cleaning.
