Description:

Arthur Andrew (Captain) Small (American, 1885-1958)

The Race for a Whale/ A View of New Bedford, Massachusetts, 1933
Signed "ARTHUR SMALL" l.r., identified in a period inscription, possibly in
the artist's hand, on the reverse.
Oil on canvas, 14 x 14 in. (35.6 x 35.6 cm),framed.

N.B. Arthur Small was both a sea captain and marine artist. Purportedly, the majority of his paintings were destroyed during a hurricane in 1938 while he was manning the Palmer's Island lighthouse in New Bedford. (1) This work was probably done from that vantage point.
