American School, Massachusetts, early 19th Century

Watercolor Memorial Picture for Benjamin Witt of Braintree, Massachusetts. Unsigned. Watercolor and ink on paper, oval scene depicting a woman grieving beside an urn-topped monument inscribed "Affectionately inscribed to the Memory of BENJAMIN WITT, who died April 17th 1818. Aged 68 Years." with a weeping willow, river, and town in the background, sight size 13 1/2 x 17 in., in a likely original black and gilt eglomise mat and period molded giltwood frame. Condition: Laid down onto panel, minor toning, minor foxing.

Note: According to genealogical records Benjamin Witt was the fourth child of seven born to John and Sarah (Ivory) Witt in Brookfield, Massachusetts on August 15 1750. He Married Olivia Campbell January 22, 1787 in Oxford, Massachusets and together they had nine children. He died April 17, 1818.
