Jefferson, Thomas (1743-1826), Autograph letter signed, dated Monticello September 13, 1808, one page, as President, to Samuel Harrison Smith, editor, concerning his defense of the embargo of European goods, 9 by 6 1/2 in., (old mat burn and toning, water damage to left side) Text in full: Sir, I troubled you by the last post with an answer to the petitions against the embargo. I now enclose the copy of an answer to the Counter-addresses, which being not likely to be numerous, I will pray you to print me 50 copies & to send them by the post which will leave Washington on Monday the 19th inst. I salute you will esteem & respect. Th. Jefferson".
