Description:

Southwest Polychrome Pottery Olla, Zuni, ht. 17, dia. 21 in.

Provenance: Collected by Mary Krippendorf and descended in the family.

Note: This polychrome storage jar is attributed to Tsayutitsa, the potter from Zuni, 1898 to about 1955. Because of the difficulty for non-Indians to pronounce her name, Tsayutitsa was also know as "Mrs. Milam's Mother." This thinly walled jar, likely made between 1930-40, is representative of her finest works which were often large with swollen mid-bodies and painted with bold exact designs that fill the white slipped background in near perfect symmetrical fashion. The traditional double row of heartline deer are separated by two large radiating floral rosettes which are very much Tsayutitsa's interpretation... Tsayutitsa was a great potter and a great painter, making her in my opinion, one of the best, if not the best potter of all time. [Robert V. Gallegos]

Literature: Batkin, Jonathan, Pottery of the Pueblos of New Mexico, 1700-1940, 1987.
Estimate $30,000-50,000
