Artist-Designed 23kt Gold Pendant, Max Ernst, "Oiseau Tete Penchee", 1973, 4 1/4 x 2 5/8 in., French maker's marks for Francois Hugo, guarantee stamps, nos. 1594 and 1775, 2 of 8, original wood and velvet fitted box.

Max Ernst (1891-1976) was a founding member of the Dada and Surrealist movements in Cologne and Paris. He worked in a wide range of styles and media. This work resembles his technique of "grattage", which involved the scraping or troweling of pigment from canvas. In 2005, a retrospective recognizing Ernst as "one of the most significant artists of the 20th century" was on view at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
