Signed and dated "Graves '54" l.r., titled in pencil l.l. (beneath the mat),identif
ied on a label from the Willard Gallery, New York, affixed to the reverse.
Sumi ink wash on paper laid down on paper, sight size 14 x 24 1/2 in. (35.6 x 62.2 cm),framed.
Condition: Toning, soiling/staining, very minor losses.



N.B. Born in Fox Valley, Oregon, in 1910, Morris Graves was a member of the Northwest Mystics along with Mark Tobey, Guy Anderson, and Kenneth Callahan. Traveling extensively as a merchant sailor in his youth and then again later on in life, Graves gained a deep knowledge of and interest in Eastern religion and spirituality within the natural world. In 1939 he worked on the Federal Art Project. Graves uses the traditional Eastern technique of sumi ink wash in this work on paper to capture the symbolic element of the water bird.

The full sheet of paper measures 17 1/4 x 27 1/2 in. The piece is not mounted/hinged. There are minor nicks to the edges and a very small loss to the l.r. Toning throughout, predominately along the upper and right edges. Soiling and staining throughout.
