N.B. Frederick Childe Hassam was born in Dorchester, Massachusetts, and attended the Boston Art School before traveling to Paris to study Impressionism at the Académie Julian. Hassam returned to the U.S. where he 'applied the principles of French Impressionism to the American setting.'1 Hassam settled in New York and spent his summers working along the New England coast, painting the rocky shores and luminous skies of New Hampshire, Maine, and Massachusetts. He sought to portray the tranquil atmosphere and picturesque scenes that reference early American settlement and Colonial life. This sketch of Norman's Woe in East Gloucester is a popular scene for Hassam, one he drew inspiration from multiple times during the summer of 1918.
