N.B. Thomas Hill is best known for his panoramic landscapes of the picturesque Yosemite Valley. Born in Birmingham, England, Hill moved to Taunton, Massachusetts, with his family at the age of fifteen. Hill moved to Boston in 1847, where he started his painting career, before going on to study at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1853. For the rest of the decade, he continued to paint images of the New England landscape, in particular New Hampshire's White Mountains. Hill often worked with other artists including George Inness, Asher B. Durand, Benjamin Champney, Albert Bierstadt, and his own brother, Edward Hill. Hill moved in San Francisco in 1861 and made his first trip to Yosemite a year later. He was a founding member of the San Francisco Art Association and served as the director for the California School of Fine Arts. His travels, both locally and internationally, included trips to Paris, New Orleans, New England, and Alaska. However, the majestic quality and striking views of Yosemite remained a constant inspiration for the artist. In 1883 Hill built a studio in the valley, and maintained it for the rest of his life.
