N.B. In his trademark series of photographs, 'Big Nudes,' Helmut Newton casts his models as powerful and confident women. His statuesque nudes pose confidently and cast assertive glances. In this iconic image, Henriette confronts the viewer head-on in a pose that is exaggerated by the low placement of the camera, perhaps suggesting that you, as the viewer, should be the one to feel objectified rather than her. Newton began his career in 1936 with an apprenticeship with photographer Elsie Simon (known as Yva). It was not until the 1950s that he began his work with fashion photography. A contributor to Vogue for over 25 years, Newton's work played an important role in the world of both fashion and photography. His now emblematic images confronted audiences with their sexually explicit subjects and challenged traditional notions of gender roles and identity.
