American School, 19th Century

Pair of Portrait Miniatures of Lieut. William and Mary Shannon of New Hampshire. Unsigned, the back of the gentleman indistinctly inscribed "Wm Shannon/N.H./ born 1799 died 1813 at Sacketts (sic) Harbor N.Y. in War of 1812," the back of the woman inscribed "Mrs. Mary Waldron Shannon born in 1782 Barrington N.H./married 1800 to Lieut. Wm Shannon." Watercolor, graphite, ink, gouache, with gilt highlights on paper, in an oval format, 3 1/2 x 2 1/2 in., in period oval wood frames with brass liners. Condition: Toning, tear at center on woman.

Note: Genealogical search records indicate William Shannon was the fifth child of eleven, born March 10, 1779 in Dover, Strafford County, New Hampshire, to Thomas and Lillias (Watson) Shannon, he married Mary Waldron September 27, 1801, and died August 27, 1813.
