Attributed to Henry Sargent (Massachusetts, 1770-1845)

Portrait of Fannie Paddock. Unsigned. Oil on canvas, c. 1825, 24 x 20 in., in a later gilt gesso frame. Condition: Craquelure, with a few small losses l.l.

Provenance: By family descent.

Note: Family history included with the painting relates that Fannie was the daughter of Major Adino Paddock of Boston, a coach-builder to the Tory gentry, the Paddock building still standing near the Common. He owned land now used as part of the Boston Common, and at the time of the Revolutionary War, Paddock's property was confiscated by the American government. Paddock, an ardent Tory fled to Nova Scotia, and later to England. His daughter Fannie married Henry Washburn of Taunton, Massachusetts. He was the son of Isaac Washburn, a Minute Man and also on Washington's staff. They lived for several years on Beacon Hill. John Carver, a Governor of Massachusetts was an ancestor of this family.
