"English East India company Ship in chase of the Potomac." "Drawn by Nathaniel S. Osgood while mate on the ship Potomac 1829/ From Aunt Ellen Osgood 1912" inscribed on a paper fragment once applied to the reverse of the original frame. Watercolor and ink on paper, showing a foreshortened image of the vessel with royals spread, and stun sails set, with another vessel in the distance, sight size 7 3/4 x 7 in., in a late 20th century molded wood frame. Condition: The original title inscribed below the work, was removed long ago and is displayed in a pocket on the reverse of the frame, toning.

Note: The first USS Potomac was a frigate in the United States Navy. She was laid down by the Washington Navy Yard in August 1819 and was launched March 1822. Fitting out was not completed until 1831, when Captain John Downes assumed control as first commanding officer. The above inscription may not be correct as her first overseas cruise, departed New York on August 19, 1831, for the Pacific station via the Cape of Good Hope. After many years of service she decommissioned January 13, 1877. She was sold to E. Stannard & Co. May 24, 1877.
