N.B. Miller is best known for his colorful, graceful compositions featuring women in sunlit settings. A St. Louis, Missouri native, Miller moved to Paris after receiving a scholarship to study at the Academie Julian. During his time in Paris, he formed close relationships with other American expatriate Impressionists such as Frederic Frieseke, Guy Rose, and Lawson Parker. Working predominately in the French countryside and strongly influenced by the work of Claude Monet and the beauty of his inspirational home, Giverny, Miller became a leading member of what was termed the "Giverny Group". Miller's work was strongly influenced by that of his contemporary, Frieseke. Unlike Frieseke, however, Miller's compositions were marked by strong contrasting colors, and a sense of monumentality. By 1901, Miller had begun to teach at the Academie Colarossi, a rival school to his alma mater. He was recognized for his work in Paris, receiving several gold medals at the Paris salons and was appointed a Knight at the French Legion of Honor. At the outbreak of World War I, Miller returned to the United States and began to teach at the Stickney School in Pasadena, California. There Miller played an important role in developing the Impressionist aesthetic in Southern California. Miller then moved to the Northeast where he became a prominent painter in Provincetown, Massachusetts, and taught at the Mary Wheeler School in Providence, Rhode Island.
