Central Plains Beaded Hide and Cloth Double Saddlebags, Lakota, c. last quarter 19th century, backed with muslin, the hide fronts with red trade cloth trim and beaded with classic multicolored Lakota geometric designs on a white background, fringe at the sides and along the bottom, (minor damage),folded lg. including fringe 34 in.

Provenance: Collected by the Shoemaker family of Washington, D.C., during Mr. Shoemaker's post-Civil War employment with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and descended in the family. Mr. Shoemaker's grandfather's brother, Thomas McKenney, was apparently selected by President Jefferson to start what became the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
