Description:

Harvard Class Album of 1856, approximately one hundred oval (3 x 4-inch) salt print images, many dated and inscribed, including Longfellow and Stephen Salisbury, in gilt-tooled leather covers titled Class of 1856, Harvard College, (missing spine).

Note: American class albums, also known as "amicorum" or "friendship" albums became popular in the early 1840s. The first Harvard album appeared in 1852, when the class chief marshal for that year, Charles Upham, persuaded the class to sit for Boston daguerreotypist Charles Whipple. The images were mounted in a wooden cabinet and copies presented to class members as a keepsake. The first album in volume format appeared in 1855, the year before the album here.
