A popular 19th century subject, these paintings evoked a sense of nostalgia and were perhaps a response to the ongoing Industrial Revolution. Although largely self-taught, Leemputteen did study at the Academy of Antwerpen. His work was influenced by the paintings of 17th century artist Paulus Potter, as well as his contemporaries such as Charles Jacques.
