N.B. Aiden Lassell Ripley was one of Boston's most distinguished artists and, using oils, watercolors, and graphics, he devoted himself to hunting and wildlife subjects. He first studied with Philip Leslie Hale at the Fenway School of Illustration and later attended the Boston Museum of Fine Arts School under Edmund Tarbell and Frank Benson. After serving in World War I, Ripley won the Paige Travelling Fellowship, which he used to study abroad in Africa, France, and Holland from 1923 to 1925. During the Great Depression, he began to incorporate sporting scenes into his art. His paintings and etchings in this genre established Ripley as one of the finest sportsman and wildlife artists in America. This success reflected Ripley's belief in simple living and enjoyment in outdoor recreation and relaxation. Ripley was a member of the Guild of Boston Artists, of which he was president from 1957 to 1968, the Boston Watercolor Society, Copley Society, National Academy of Design, the American Watercolor Society, Allied Artists of America, and the National Society of Mural Painters.
