N.B. Born in Troy, New York, Brown studied with Thomas Grinnell and portraitist Abel B. Moore. Inspired by Thomas Cole and the Hudson River School, Brown began to paint landscapes beginning around 1850. Although not exceedingly common in Hudson River School scenes, the inclusion of American Indians in this work was perhaps intended to lend a romantic quality to the piece. By around 1869 he had abandoned the landscape in favor of still life compositions.
