Thomas Seir Cummings (American, 1804 - 1894)
Pair of Portrait Miniatures of Dr. and Mrs. Embury. The portrait of Mrs. Embury signed "Cummings" l.r., the sitter's identified on reverse label. Watercolor and gouache on ivory, 4 x 3 1/4 in., in molded giltwood frames. Condition: Very good.
Note: Thomas Cummings was born in Bath, England and emigrated to New York City when he was a child. He studied art with Henry Inman and became his studio partner from 1824 to 1827. He founded the National Academy of Design with Nathaniel Rogers and from 1850 to 1859, he served as Vice-President of the Academy. He stopped exhibiting his own work in 1851. He was one of New York City's most sought after miniaturists.
