Provenance: Descended within the family to the present owner.
N.B. Olivier de Penne is best known for his depictions of animals, especially dogs, done in the Barbizon style. Born is Paris in 1831, he studied with Leon Cogniet and Charles Emile Jacque and was a frequent exhibitor at the Paris salon. de Penne loved animals, a fact which is clearly reflected in his work through a deep understanding of both their anatomy and personality.
