Signed "Wm. L. Picknell" l.r., partial label (see below) affixed to the stretcher.
Oil on canvas, 53 x 72 in. (134.6 x 182.9 cm),unframed.
Condition: Lined, retouch, craquelure, surface grime.
Exhibition: Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, Sixty-second Annual Exhibition, 1892, no. 192.
N.B. A New England native, Picknell spent much of his career traveling both within the United Sates and abroad. His travels abroad began around 1873, when Picknell went to Rome to study with George Inness. He then moved to Paris where he attended the Ecole Des Beaux-Arts and studied with Jean-Leon Gerome. Later, he traveled to several artist colonies throughout France including Pont-Aven, Concarneau, Grez, Moret, and Antibes. Picknell is best known for his plein-air landscapes of both American and European views and his works possess a strong sense of light and air. His work is characterized by Impressionist techniques including a rapid painting style and heavy application of paint.
