Description:

After an Engraving by Edward Savage (American, 1761-1817)

Liberty in the Form of the Goddess of Youth Giving Support to the Bald Eagle. Unsigned, an inscription on the reverse reads: "Liberty in the Form of the Goddess of Youth Giving Support to the Bald Eagle. Copied by Rachael Lincoln And given by her to her Daughter Emily Gilbert." Watercolor and gouache on paper, 23 1/2 x 14 3/4 in., in likely original molded giltwood frame. Condition: Toning, foxing, make-do paper patch l.l. corner.

Note: This copy of a well-known engraving is a folk expression of national symbolism popular in the first quarter of the 19th century. It depicts the figure of Liberty, purported to be on Beacon Hill, where she tramples under foot the Key of the Bastille, representing the key of tyranny connected with the different orders of hereditary nobility. In the background is a thirteen-star American flag topped with the Liberty Cap. In the lower right corner is a view of Boston Harbor showing the evacuation of the British fleet.
