Attributed to Horace Bundy (Vermont, 1814-1883)

Mourning Picture of a Mother and her Son. Unsigned. Oil on canvas, c. 1830, depicting the couple probably mourning the loss of husband and father, seated on a couch with scrolled arms, the bespectacled mother wears a white ruffled bonnet and a sheer white collar over her black dress, the son wears a black checked cravat, white shirt and black jacket with high collar, behind them, characteristic of Horace Bundy's paintings, is a parted curtain revealing a book entitled Euclid, a bible, a slate, and shelves of books, indicating the deceased father was probably a schoolmaster, 26 3/4 x 41 1/2 in., in a period molded wood frame with gilt liner. Condition; Relined, repairs, retouch.

Provenance: Ex Bob Bishop, New York City.

Exhibited: The Minneapolis Institute of Arts, By and for the People: American Folk Art From a Private Collection,October 3rd -November 14th 1976, retaining exhibition label.

mother- retouch to areas around spectacles, above top rt.of head, several areas on face, 2 in. line (tear?) above rt. shoulder, few repaired tears on left facing arm and l.l , retouch to background area left of head.

Son- retouch to his sideburns, small spots on his face and eyes, hairline, cravat, drapery left of his head.
