American School, 19th Century

Portrait of a Gentleman. Unsigned. Watercolor, pen and ink, and graphite on paper. The man portrayed is wearing an earring, a black frock coat, and trousers, holding a top hat in one hand, standing on a red, blue, and brown fanciful floor cloth, 6 1/8 x 5 in., in a molded wood frame. Condition: Minor light stains, repairs.
Estimate $1,000-1,500

repairs to paper: l.r. small piece attached with paper, lower left corner, about 1/2 in., along lower edge, painting done to board behind portrait paper to extend design of floorcloth for framing, small tears, two on rt. edge, one on left edge, portrait affixed to backing on four corners, with restorer's paper tape.
