Description:

Attributed to William W. Kennedy (American, 1817-1871)

Portrait of a Young Woman Holding a Red Rose. Penciled inscription "W.W. Kennedy (illeg.) 1846," on reverse of frame. Oil on canvas, 24 x 20 in., in original molded giltwood frame. Condition: Cleaned, minor retouch.

According to oral history the woman portrayed and the following two portraits were three members of the Rogers-Avery-Watrous families of Ledyard, Connecticut. Note: William W. Kennedy is known to have worked as a portrait painter in New Bedford, Massachusetts, in 1845 and in Berwick, Maine, in 1847. He is included in the group known as the "Prior Hamblin" artists because of the stylistic similarity of his portraits. Recorded proximity of Kennedy and William Matthew Prior at particular times explains their remarkably similar painting characteristics.
