Attributed to Henry Schreiner Stellwagen (American, d. 1866)

Five Small Watercolor Views. All unsigned. Watercolors on paper, the first showing three goats with mountains beyond, the second showing two sailors standing at Kosciusko's Monument and inscribed "Kosciusko's Monument/West Point", the third showing two recumbent cows and a standing one with two large monuments on a cliff beyond, the fourth showing a stone tower flying a pennant and inscribed "B. Beards Castle St. Thom", the last showing two birds in a streambed with hills and ominous clouds beyond, hts. 4 1/4, 4, 4, 3 3/4, 4 1/2, wds. 5 1/2, 5 1/2, 3, 2 1/2, 5 1/4 in., all unframed. Condition: Glue residue on reverse and minor toning.

Note: Kosciusko's Monument still stands as West Point, New York, celebrating one of the first European volunteers to aid the American revolutionary cause. Kosciusko was a Polish military engineer who helped the revolutionaries to victory, particularly at West Point and Saratoga, New York, where a monument also stands.

The inscription on the small picture of a castle tower identifies the building as Blackbeard's castle, a tourist attraction on St. Thomas, in the United States Virgin Islands.
