Attributed to Joseph Dunkerley (Boston, ac. 1784-1788)

Miniature Portraits of Captain John Page and Mrs. John Page. The portrait of Mrs. Page signed with the initials "ID" c.r. Watercolor on ivory, 1 1/8 x 1 in., gilt copper oval cases.

Provenance: By family descent.

Exhibited: Smithsonian Institution National Collection of Fine Arts July 1974-July 1977.

Note: Joseph Dunkerley was born in England and arrived in America with the British Army, but deserted soon after to serve as a lieutenant in a Massachusetts artillery regiment. After a time, he became a civilian and a resident of Boston. He rented a house from silversmith Paul Revere, who probably made many of his miniature cases. A portrait of Mrs. Revere by Dunkerley is in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. At the end of 1788, Dunkerley moved to Jamaica.
The miniatures were on loan to the Smithsonian Institution in November of 1973, June of 1976, and August of 1989, according to records provided.
