Description:

Engraved Commemorative Powder Horn, probably late 18th/early 19th century, the body of the horn engraved with maps, motifs, and inscriptions including: "Paul Warren 6 Meay 1763 New York," and a Masonic square and compass symbol with the initials "PW"; maps of the Hudson and Mohawk river valleys, with numerous towns and forts named, which served as the main transportation routes between the St. Laurence River Valley and New York City, which is portrayed pictorially at the bottom of the horn; a depiction of the El Morro fort, ships and Havana commemorating the Havana Expedition in 1762; a British coat of arms and shield above a banner inscribed "DIEU ET MON DROIT," (God and my [birth] right),over flags, drum and weapons of war; carved wooden acorn-shaped stopper, raised ring on throat, lower extension lobe with sawtooth edge and pierced for a carrying strap, brass plug secured with brass tacks, lg. 10 3/4 in.

Provenance: Descended in the family of Edward Sears Clinch (Justice of New York Supreme Court) to Edward Sears Clinch, Jr., to Peter Todd Clinch.
