Copied from the Portrait of Mrs. Rubens Peale and Son, Eliza Burd Patterson(1795-1864),and Charles Willson Peale (1821-1871), inscribed on reverse (before lining),"Mrs. Rubens Peal and her son Charles, Painted by Sarah Peale in Baltimore, c. 1822."
Mary Jane Peale copied only the child from the double portrait described above, 19th c. Philadelphia. Unsigned. Oil on canvas, the seated boy, Charles, wearing a red dress and holding a book to which he is pointing with a blue-green velvet cushion behind him, 22 x 18 3/4 in., in an old gilded frame. Condition: Good, relined, minor touchup, cleaned.

Provenance: The child pictured is the son of Rubens Peale and the older brother of Mary Jane Peale, the artist who copied his portrait. This portrait descended in the Peale family to Charles Coleman Sellers, a direct descendant, whose will lists this painting among others that he bequeathed to his son and daughter as "Mary Jane Peale painting of C. W. Peale."
