Description:

Grand Army of the Republic Commemorative Thirty-eight Star Flag, "PRESENTED JAN 8 1886 BY MRS. EUNICE B. NORRIS BORN APR 15, 1816," pieced cotton with appliqued and embroidered decoration featuring the stars and stripes with thirty-eight stars appliqued onto the blue field, the reverse featuring sixty-nine blocks with red, white, and blue symbolic Civil War Corps patches appliqued and embroidered onto white and navy fields, embroidered lettering at the top reads "GAR/FRATERNITY CHARITY/LOYALTY ALBERT M. PERKINS POST 80," (minor imperfections),56 x 37 in.

Note: The flag was made by Eunice Norris who was born in Lincolnville, Maine, married Ezekiel Gilman Norris, and had six children. Their oldest son Wooden Gilman Norris served in the Union Army in Company "A" of the Maine 25th Infantry. It is likely that after the war Wooden was a member of the GAR Albert Perkins Post and his mother wanted to honor him and fellow Union veterans with this flag. Both Eunice and her son resided in the town of Epping, New Hampshire at the time the flag was made, which is also the town where the GAR post is located.
Estimate $3,000-4,000
