Description:

Cather, Willa (1873-1947), Letter signed, April 19th, 1937, two pages, to Mrs. Samuel Posner, New York City, concerning her defense of an article she had written concerning the Jew in America, "I think I spoke only of the Jewish boy born in New York City, and educated in a New York University. Within the last few years, a number of these young men have expressed themselves in a very cocky and patronizing fashion about the older American writers whom we were trained to respect....I think the people one chooses for friends rather indicate one's taste, and practically all of my oldest personal friends are jews. My publisher is a Jew (and one of my best friends),my oculist is a Jew, my physician is a Jew....If you take the trouble to read the story I have spoken of, Old Mrs. Harris, you will certainly understand something of my real feeling about the Jews;" together with envelope and copy of recipient's original letter.
