Description:

Rare Shaker Cherry Cased Wall Timepiece, Signed John Winkley "Canterbury" on its silvered engraved brass dial, 1792-1795, the case consists of a molded top above a glazed and decorated molded arched door opening to the dial and an arched waist door which reveals the pendulum for this brass eight-day weight-driven movement with its pendulum mounted directly to the verge arbor above a molded base. The polychrome floral reverse painted glazed door and minor restoration to the case was accomplished by the Shakers probably in the 1830's when the clock was still in the Canterbury Community,( this clock remained in that community until the 1870's according to oral history),ht. 37 1/4 , wd. at molding 9 1/4, case wd. 8 1/2, dial diam. 5 3/8 in.

Note: John Winkley, clockmaker, (1767-1813) was a brother at Canterbury, New Hampshire Shaker community from 1792-1795 when he left, at age 28. In 1798 he was recorded as a clockmaker and resident of Newington, New Hampshire. He was married the following year. In 1800 and 1810 the census lists Winkley as a clockmaker living in Durham, New Hampshire. He died there at the age of 46 in 1813 still listed as a clockmaker.
It is not known where and how Winkley received his clockmaking training. He is one of the few clock makers known to have built movements with the pendulum rod mounted directly to the verge arbor. Other makers who also used this method include Simon and Aaron Willard and Abel Hutchins.
