N.B. Potthast was born to a family of German immigrant artisans in Cincinnati, Ohio. At the age of thirteen he was already attending the McMicken School of Design, and at sixteen he was working for the Strobridge Lithography Company. He maintained his interest in lithography and illustration for much of his early career.

In 1892 he moved to New York. Like many residents of the city, he was enamoured of Coney Island and cool summers of Brighton Beach. By 1910, his views of women and children at leisure and play at the shore had become his favored theme, and this remained the case for the rest of his life. As illustrated by the work presented here, these compositions feature a bright palette and Impressionistic brushwork.

This work will be included in Mary Ran's forthcoming catalogue raisonne of the artist's work.
Estimate $7,000-9,000
