N.B. Born in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania, Rice moved to Paris in 1905. In the fall of that year she saw the Fauvist works of Henri Matisse at the Salon d'Automne. Her style absorbed the Fauvist palette and forceful brushstroke. At about this time she developed an intimate relationship with Scottish colorist John Duncan Ferguson. The result was a style of expressive color. By the 1920s (the period of the painting presented here) the vivid color gave way to a concentration in expressive gestures and planes of color.
