Currier & Ives, publishers (American, 1857-1907)

THE LIFE OF A HUNTER. "A Tight Fix." 1861, (Conningham 3522). Identified by inscriptions in the matrix. Lithograph with hand-coloring on paper, sheet size 23 3/4 x 31 1/4 in., in a molded maple frame. Condition: Margins of 2 1/8 in. or more, 3/4 in. repair to c.r. margin with associated retouch.

Note: This lithograph was ranked no. 5 in the original "Best 50," and no. 16 in the "New Best 50" large folio.

Exhibitions: Milwaukee Art Museum, "Currier & Ives: Best 50 Revisited," June 8 to September 16th, 1990. Exhibition label affixed to the reverse. A partial provenance was inscribed in pen on the reverse of the frame: "Sold 1927 by Kennedy Galleries to Norman James. Sold Nov. 1928 at Plaza Auction Galleries for 3000 to Frederick K. Barbour. Purchased by Kennedy Galleries 1955 from F.K. Barbour, sold to Robert B. Honeyman, 1955."
