Wood and Iron Chandelier, America, late 18th century, baluster-turned wooden hub painted white, now grey with age, issuing eight tin candle sockets supported by iron wire arms, (imperfections),ht. 15, dia. 29 1/2 in.

Provenance: Ex collection Ralph Carpenter Jr., Mowbra Hall, Scarsdale, New York.

Note: Ralph Carpenter, a noted preservationist, collector, consultant, and author, in 1950-51 built Mowbra Hall, a house that resembles a mid-18th century dwelling both inside and out, by assembling sections of 18th century rooms from houses being demolished in New England coastal towns. Accompanying the lot are photocopies of two periodical articles both written by Ralph Carpenter Jr. One is entitled "Mowbra Hall and a Collection of Period Rooms," reprinted from The Connoisseur, June and August, 1972. In it this chandelier is photographed in situ on p.7. The other article is from an issue of The Magazine Antiques from May, 1952. It is entitled "Mowbra Hall-An 'Eighteenth-Century' Dwelling House."
