N.B. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Charles Russell quickly became fascinated with the stories of the American West told to him by his uncle. From an early age, he harbored romantic ideas about the bravery and excitement of life in the American West, and eventually became a sheepherder in Montana. So fixated with the lifestyle of the Native Americans, he spent many winters among tribes such as the Blackfeet and the Blood Indians. In 1896, when his painting career took over as the main focus of his efforts, he quickly became one of the most celebrated painters of the American West. Russell's dynamic depictions of the buffaloes, cowboys, and Indians of the West show his natural talent and romantic notion of this wild frontier.
The lot is accompanied by a copy of a letter from F.G. Renner discussing the work.

Provennce: A private New England collection.
