Description:

Coolidge, Calvin (1872-1933), Letter Signed, March 10th, 1920, as Governor of Massachusetts, to the Honorable Wendell P. Stafford, Supreme Court of the District of Columbia, two pages typed, a pointed letter concerning his review of an address given by the judge, the Sherman laws and his handling of strikes, "The real remedy for strikes will be the conviction that they do not pay," (very good). Note: This letter was sent in the aftermath of Coolidge's crushing of the Boston Police Strike in which 85% of the force lost their jobs. As a crusader for public safety and welfare, his hard-line attitude was quite at odds with his normal taciturn behavior stating, "There is no right to strike against the public safety by anybody, anywhere, anytime."
