Pickering, Timothy (1745-1829), Autograph Letter Signed, October 9th, 1795, one page, as Secretary of State, to Mr. William Allen Dean, concerning the mission of Mr. (Thomas) Pinckney to Spain and commenting on the nomenclature, docketed, (very good, minor bleed through upper left).Text in part: Sir, / A letter dated at Madrid the 21st of July from Mr. Pinckney intimating an idea that he may not accomplish the object of his mission has the following passage: - "I do not conceive that it can be necessary for me to remain here until an answer can be obtained to this letter." Now the packet addressed to Mr. Pinckney herewith transmitted, relates to his negotiation at Madrid; and should be forwarded to him by the most direct safe conveyance; if after it reached your hands, the intelligence you should have received induces you to think that it may find him there. Should you know that he has left Madrid, it will be to no purpose to forward the packet....Sir, your obt. Servant." Note: The negotiations being carried out by Thomas Pinckney and the Spanish crown became the Treaty of San Ildefonso. This agreement gave the United States free navigation of the Mississippi River.
