Description:

Embroidered and Appliqued Cotton Quilt, America, fourth quarter 19th century, entitled Scenes of Childhood, the quilt is centered with three figural vignettes which are based on illustrations from popular publications of the day with captions for each scene inscribed in ink as well as the facial features, including: "Here's some more sins in my pottet," "Gran-pa ride first," and "Dolly is sick." Flanking the vignettes are panels with figures of two dogs, a cat, and a cow, with a cornucopia in each corner issuing budding flowers, worked in calico printed cotton in shades of red, green, pink, and brown, appliqued to a white woven cotton ground, green calico border, quilted with leaf and diagonal line designs, 37 x 35 in., mounted and enclosed in a plexiglass frame, accompanied by the book entitled Small Endearments: Nineteenth -century Quilts For Children and Dolls, in which the quilt is illustrated on the jacket and on p. 152, and by the poster for the Los Angeles County Museum of Art Exhibition on which it is illustrated.
