Fruitwood Gunter's Quadrant, English, third quarter 18th century, for 51 degrees 30 seconds (London),with incised lines and punched characters, the limb divided 0-90, calendar scale with dates of the solstices marked with fleurs de lis, the horary quadrant with locations of five bright stars, also listed in the shadow square, with one (of two) brass pin hole sights, hole in side for plumb bob storage, radius 6 in.
The position of the equinox indicates this was made for use with the Gregorian calendar which was adopted in England in 1751.
The named stars are given as follows: PW for Pegasus, Arc for Arcturus, Lh for lion's heart/Regulus, Be for bull's eye/Aldebaran and Vh for vulture's eye/Altair.
