N.B. Antonio Jacobsen was born in Copenhagen in 1850. He studied at the Royal Academy there until 1871, when the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War forced him to immigrate to the United States to avoid enlisting. He settled in New York City and eventually set up a studio in Hoboken, New Jersey. Jacobsen is considered one of the finest of American marine artists.
