William Howard Yorke (British, 1847-1921)

The British Ship Patterdale. Signed and indistinctly dated "W. H. Yorke 189-" l.r., the three-masted ship identified on bow, in full sail, flying a British flag, and depicted upon choppy waters with the coastline and several ships in the distance, sight size 18 3/4 x 28 3/8 in., in a gilt gesso frame. Condition: Two 3/4-inch tears l.r., scattered paint losses lower edge.

N.B. William Howard Yorke (1847-1921) and his father William G. Yorke settled in Liverpool, England, about 1855. They were both marine artists. While William G. Yorke departed for New York, his son continued in England. William H. Yorke's paintings have a distinctive use of bow and stern reflections. The Patterdale was the first vessel built by the Whitehaven Shipbuilding Co. and was launched June 3, 1871. She was bought by J.D. Newton's Dale Line and registered at Liverpool. The Dale Line was known to be one of the best run sailing ship lines in the Cape Horn trade of the 1870s and '80s.
