Signed and inscribed "H.POWERS Sculp." l.r.
White marble sculpture, 2 1/2 x 10 in. (7 x 25.4 cm),presented on a low marble plinth.
Condition: Damage to index finger and cuff.

Provenance: Descended within the family of the sitter.

N.B. Writer Francese Hubbard Litchfield Turnbull was born in Utica, New York, c. 1845, to Edwin C. Litchfield and Grace Hill (Hubbard) Litchfield. She married lawyer Lawrence Turnbull in 1871. The couple lived in Baltimore and Towson, Maryland, and had five children. Together they founded the Percy Turnbull Lectureship on Poetry at John Hopkins University. Francese was active in social and literary circles and co-founded the Women's Literary Club of Baltimore. She died in 1927.
